By Fayeque Mir: March 3, 2025
Our modern world is facing a pandemic of mental health problems. Its likely even you or a loved one are stressed (Or else I don’t know why you would be reading this). To help cope with these hard times, please consider practicing any or all of the tips below. Read part 1 of this series of tips too for some more ways to feel happy.
1. Limit Social Media Use
While social media can foster connection, excessive use can lead to feelings of inadequacy and anxiety. Its easy to think “I’m ugly“ or “I’m not happy enough“ when you see fake, highly filtered portions of people’s lives on social media. A thing to remember if you feel inadequate, is the fact that what you see on social media is fake. Remember that you are not ugly and that you can be happy if you set your mind to it. Set boundaries for your social media consumption and take regular breaks. Focus on real-life interactions to strengthen your relationships. You’ve got this.
2. Seek Professional Help
If you're struggling with your mental health, don't hesitate to seek professional help. Keep in mind that by doing so, you aren’t “crazy“ or a “psychopath“. Its totally normal not to be okay sometimes. And Therapists, counselors, and support groups can provide valuable tools and strategies to cope with challenges. I can’t stress the next sentence enough: Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
3. Engage in Hobbies and Interests
Pursuing hobbies can provide a sense of fulfillment and joy. But remember that hobbies shouldn’t include excessive screen time or worse, drug and alcohol use. These activities are harmful and won’t help you in a stressful situation. Whether gardening, reading, or doing helpful physical activity, engaging in hobbies that you love can improve your mood and overall mental health.
4. Practice Gratitude
Cultivating gratitude can shift your focus from negative thoughts to positive ones. Remember to look at those who have less than you. For example: If you are sad you have no friends, consider the fact that you have family. If you don’t have a big house and live in an apartment instead, consider the fact that you at least have a home. Keeping a gratitude journal where you write down things you are thankful for each day is a good practice as well. This can enhance your overall perspective on life.
